The Second Piece in "STIGMA" (2017)

The second piece featured in "STIGMA" is titled "Looming Overhead." The completed weaving is roughly 3 feet by 4 feet of woven string. The same knot is repeated in different sizes to create the imagery using line, pattern, repetition, etc. The process of making the weaving is where the meditation occurs. Through performing the same, seemingly mundane activity, one can freely think in a space that is theirs, without feeling unproductive or anxious. My own tendencies cause me to fidget and overthink; this process allowed me to weed through my thoughts and feelings and put my energy into something bigger. Every small change led to the bigger picture. In relation to the show, it also functions as a replacement addiction for a previous, harmful addiction. As we learned in the meetings leading up to the show, it only takes 21 days to form a habit. Overall, the weaving shows how to replace detrimental addictions with meaningful ones, and also find a meditative process that allows room for growth towards the end goal.

Aside from the inclusion in the "STIGMA" art show, this weaving was featured at Mount Olive Art Competition (April 2017), and won first place in the textiles category. This weaving also won teacher's choice at the AP art show in June of 2017.
